Pundit Ian Wright has heaped praise on former Manchester United talent Angel Gomes as he continues to shine with Lille.

Not everybody can rise from the United ranks to become a first-team star like Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.

Many United talents have to leave the club and forge a path for themselves elsewhere.

We saw that on Sunday as Luton Town defender Teden Mengi lined up against United having left Old Trafford over the summer.

Mengi is now wanted by Bayer Leverkusen and another former United prospect is now catching the eye…

Ian Wright hails Angel Gomes

Angel Gomes looked like becoming United’s next great star to emerge from the academy into the first team.

A talented playmaker or winger, Gomes dazzled in the United youth setup and spent 14 years in the Old Trafford ranks.

Sadly, United couldn’t keep hold of Gomes and he decided to walk away at the end of his contract in 2020, securing a move to Lille.

We are now coming up to four years since Gomes moved on and he has just reached the 100 game mark for Lille.

After bagging his fifth assist of the season on Saturday, Gomes has now been praised by pundit Ian Wright.

Wright took to social media to suggest that he isn’t seeing enough love for Gomes and what he is achieving in France.

Wright felt that Gomes turned in ‘another top performance’ against Le Havre and believes that he has now earned and England call-up alongside Mainoo.

The former Arsenal hitman added that Gomes ‘backed himself’ by leaving United and is now a great example to young academy players.

Gomes has reinvented himself away from United

United fans may remember Gomes as a goalscoring attacking midfielder or left-sided winger during his time in the United ranks.

Gomes still regularly plays as a number 10 for Lille but he has shown his quality from a deeper role too.

Gomes has played as a central midfielder and even as a lone sitting midfielder, especially in the England Under-21 ranks.

It’s not often you see many 5ft 6in defensive midfielders but Gomes has shown that he can play that role, something we never really saw at United.

Now 23, Gomes has developed his game and become a more rounded player away from Old Trafford.

United will surely keep tabs on Gomes for a potential return to the club down the line, but he will certainly feel that he made the right decision in leaving the club.
