Andreas Pereira given extra time off before returning to United
With the spotlight firmly on Cristiano Ronaldo, there was another senior Manchester United player who didn’t report for pre-season training today.
United’s international stars returned to Carrington following a three-week break and joined Erik ten Hag’s second week of pre-season training.
With a wealth of players returning, the former Ajax manager has the opportunity to gaze over more of his playing squad ahead of Friday’s departure for Bangkok.
Ronaldo, who is attracting interest from Chelsea, didn’t report for pre-season training, citing ‘family reasons’ for his absence.
Andreas Pereira absent from Manchester United pre-season training
While James Garner and Facundo Pellistri, who spent last season out on loan at Nottingham Forest and Alaves respectfully, returned Andreas Pereira was absent from Manchester United pre-season training.
Garner and Pellistri had been on international duty with England Under-21s and Uruguay while Pereira only recently finished his loan spell with Brazilian side Flamengo.
The 26-year-old played 53 games for Flamengo after the Brazilian returned to his homeland last August.
The one-time Brazil international scored eight times during his loan spell, the last of which was a wonderful long-range strike in the Copa Libertadores in what was his last game for the club.
Pereira was hoping to sign for the Brazilian outfit on a permanent deal, and in the short time since the former PSV Eindhoven’s spell with Flamengo has ended, it looks like Mengão have already moved on.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Flamengo are close to signing Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal from Inter Milan.
Pereira, who has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, has been the subject of a bid from newly-promoted Fulham.
The Manchester Evening News has reported that Pereira has been given extra time off given his loan spell has only just ended.
The report states that Pereira has ‘very high’ fitness levels following his period in South America, where he played several matches at high-altitude.
The club feels that the Brazilian will be able to make a quick transition back into first-team training if he is summoned.
It remains unclear whether Pereira, who last featured for United in August 2020, will form a part of the pre-season travelling party that departs on Friday.
