Cristiano Ronaldo not expected back at Manchester United training today

Wantaway striker Cristiano Ronaldo is not expected back at Manchester United training today due to family reasons.

This comes after the 37-year-old dropped the bombshell on Saturday night that he would like to leave the Reds this summer if a suitable offer from a Champions League club was made.

With Erik ten Hag set to start the second week of pre-season training with his new club, the former Ajax manager has been handed a stern challenge to kick off his Manchester United tenure.

With Manchester United due to depart for Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday for Tour 22, question marks surrounding Ronaldo’s future at the club are only intensifying.

The club has reaffirmed that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is not for sale and fully expect him to fly to Bangkok for the first stage of the club’s pre-season tour.

However, a lot will depend on how the talks that are due to take place with Ten Hag go.

Players who represented their countries in last month’s international fixtures are expected to return to Carrington today, but Ronaldo, who was last season’s top scorer for the Red Devils with 24 goals across all competitions, will be a notable absentee.

The Athletic report that Ronaldo will not report for pre-season training today due to “family reasons” and the club has reportedly accepted his explanation.

Ronaldo has 12 months remaining on the contract he signed when he re-joined United last summer from Juventus.

Following last season’s sixth-place finish, United qualified for the Europa League instead of Europe’s premier club competition the Champions League.

United’s number seven last missed out on playing in the Champions League back in 2002-03 when he was playing in the UEFA Cup for boyhood club Sporting Lisbon before being signed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Portuguese legend is the Champions League’s all-time top scorer and leading appearance maker.
