Andre Onana has candidly spoken out on Manchester United’s Europa League campaign and one Red Devils team that deeply impressed him in the past.

Manchester United are on the verge of reaching the knockout rounds of the Europa League in the 2024-25 campaign under manager Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils drew their opening three matches in UEFA’s second-tier club competition under Erik ten Hag before the former United manager was sacked.

Ruben Amorim has overseen a strong run of results with United in the Europa League after he arrived at Old Trafford last November from Sporting CP.

United have won all four of their last four Europa League matches under the 40-year-old Portuguese manager and Ruud van Nistelrooy, with the Red Devils fourth in the league table.

Amorim’s men will all but certainly punch their ticket to the Europa League’s last-16 if United beat Romanian outfit FCSB in Bucharest on Thursday evening.

Man Utd star Onana on Europa League

Manchester United last won the Europa League competition in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, with the Red Devils beating Ajax 2-0 in the final.

The Red Devils reached the final of the Europa League again in 2021, only for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to lose on penalties to La Liga outfit Villarreal.

Both Andre Onana and Matthijs de Ligt were part of the Ajax team that fell short of Jose Mourinho’s United side in the Europa League final in Stockholm.

Speaking to United Review, Onana admitted that it was an “unbelievable” moment for the Dutch side to reach the final in the first place.

“For us, it was just unbelievable because, a few months before, we were playing with the second team and we achieved for Ajax the unthinkable at that time,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“We were young players and we were playing so [well] with no experience and then bam, we arrived to the final.”

Onana praises ex-Man Utd manager and team

Jose Mourinho signed off his debut season at Old Trafford by scooping both the Europa League trophy and the League Cup with United.

The 62-year-old Portuguese manager, who is currently the head coach of Fenerbahce, replaced Louis van Gaal as United boss in 2016.

Mourinho’s reign at Old Trafford came to an end in 2018 and the ‘Special One’ was permanently succeeded by United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Onana was impressed with the United players in the 2017 Europa League-winning team and praised former Red Devils and Chelsea manager Mourinho.

“Of course, we play against better teams than ours,” he continued.

“They had a great coach, great players. We lost because they were just better than us and we were young with no experience.

“I lost against them so I have to win for them. Now, we have a bit more experience. We know the competition.

“We can read the games. We know when to play long, when to play short, we can feel it.

“It’s a different time. A lot of time has passed already, so we’ll be ready.”
