Andre Onana has shared his admiration for one Manchester United teammate and talked up how “very proud” he is of the current Red Devils first-team squad.

Manchester United have had a mixed 2024-25 campaign, with the Red Devils struggling to make an impact in the Premier League.

The Red Devils languish in 12th place and have won only eight Premier League matches from their 23 matches played.

United are 13 points clear of the relegation zone and Ruben Amorim’s men are 12 points adrift from the Premier League top four.

Despite their hit-and-miss Premier League form, United have been more consistent with picking up results in their Europa League campaign.

The Red Devils have won all four of their last four Europa League matches under Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ruben Amorim and United are on the verge of reaching the knockout rounds.

Onana praises Man Utd star

Speaking to United Review, Andre Onana has opened up on his relationship with Matthijs de Ligt and playing alongside the Manchester United star again.

Matthijs de Ligt played alongside Onana at Ajax and the 25-year-old Dutchman made a real name for himself under ex-United manager Erik ten Hag at the club.

The United defender was reunited with both Onana and Erik ten Hag after the Red Devils signed him from German side Bayern Munich last summer.

De Ligt has had a strong start to life at Old Trafford and the Netherlands international has been a key defender under both Ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

“I enjoyed myself playing with him in Ajax and I’m enjoying myself playing with him here. What a good guy. Very good player,” Onana said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“Not only him, we are all good guys here because we know each other for more than one year already but you have some players who have just arrived.

“They’re very good guys, it’s a very good group, so I’m very proud of this team.

“I’m happy to be part of this family because, at the end of the day, only together we can achieve big things.”

De Ligt on playing under Amorim

Matthijs de Ligt has made 29 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils since his summer move and the United star has impressed at times.

The former Ajax and Juventus defender has played under Amorim in the United manager’s three-man backline and has shown his ability to adapt to the system.

Speaking on Amorim, De Ligt said that the 40-year-old United manager still has a lot to learn about English football while trying to improve the current first-team squad.

“I think the manager has learned that we still have a lot to improve on – especially in the build-up phase of play,” he explained.

“But he will have also learned that even against the teams at the bottom we can still put up a fight, as well as against the teams at the top.

“We have the mentality – and that, for me, is the biggest improvement that we have right now. We are fighting for each other.

“You see we are fighting on the pitch for every metre. I think that is the base for becoming a great team, step by step.

“I think we have to improve in other aspects but the fact we are doing this makes it a very big win.”
