Andre Onana claims all Man Utd players know ‘most important thing’ for Red Devils this season, it ‘will not be easy’

Andre Onana has revealed that all of his Manchester United teammates are on the same wavelength over their important objective under Ruben Amorim this season.

The 28-year-old Cameroonian shot-stopper has had a mixed second season at Old Trafford, despite starting off the campaign in strong form for Manchester United.

Andre Onana came under fire during his first United season after he left Inter Milan in 2023 and was reunited with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag, who was sacked by United last October, kept faith with the former Inter Milan and Ajax star during his run of form in the 2023-24 campaign.

Onana was consistent during the early weeks of the 2024-25 campaign, but the Cameroon international’s form has taken a major hit over the last couple of months.

But Ruben Amorim has stuck with Onana as his No 1 for now and the Red Devils star has fended off a challenge from Altay Bayindir for his place between the sticks.

Onana pinpoints Man Utd objective

Andre Onana has started six of Manchester United’s seven Europa League matches in the 2024-25 campaign, with the Red Devils turning around their form in Europe.

United picked up three draws under former United manager Erik ten Hag before the Dutchman was sacked, with Ruben Amorim appointed as head coach last November.

The Red Devils have won all four of their last four Europa League matches under Ruud van Nistelrooy and Amorim and United are on the verge of securing a place in the knockout rounds.

Amorim opted to drop Onana for United’s last Europa League match and Altay Bayindir was between the sticks for the 2-1 win over Rangers at Old Trafford.

Speaking to United Review, Onana has insisted that the clear-cut objective for United is to reach the Europa League final and lift the trophy.

“The most important thing for us is to win,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“As a Manchester United player, we know how important that competition is.

“For me, we have to win the Europa League. For the guys, they all know it’s a big opportunity for us to go directly into the Champions League, so we will give everything to win the Europa League.

“If we fail, it’s not good because it’s something we definitely have to win and we will give everything to win.

“It will not be easy because some opponents are very good, and that’s why we’ve drawn some games against very good opponents in the past.”

Onana on Man Utd mentality for Europa League

United are fourth in the Europe League’s league phase table, which was introduced this season, and are within touching distance of reaching the knockout rounds.

The Red Devils will definitely punch their ticket to the last 16 if they beat Romanian outfit FCSB at the National Arena in Bucharest on Thursday evening.

Onana added that United’s winning mentality can catapult them to the Europa League final at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao in May.

“But the mentality and the standard is always high,” he said.

“So, any competition we will step in to play, we have to win, and the Europa League is one of them, so we’ll go there with the winning mentality, to play the last game in Bilbao.

“We already know where the final is, so we have to be ready to give everything and try to win the Europa League because it’s very important for us, not only the Europa League [but also] in the FA Cup and in the Premier League we have to try to finish as high as we can.”
