Amad’s last Manchester United appearance came back in May on the final day of last season.
He was given a chance to impress against Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Amad played 67 minutes in the 1-1 draw and ended feeling like he should have done more.
He showed flashes of quality, beating opponents, and played smart passes, but also lacked a cutting edge.
There was one moment in the first half when he was through on goal, cut inside, and instead of shooting, he passed to Jesse Lingard and over hit it.
Amad was clearly disappointed with himself and sent a message out on Instagram apologising to supporters.
He pledged to learn from the chance and do better next time. The worry of course, is whether he will get another first team chance again in 2021.
Amad, no need to apologise
There is no need for Amad to apologise. There was no harm done. United drew the game and have already secured top spot in the group.
It was unsurprising Amad lacked a bit of sharpness. His last game for United was in May, he played in the Olympics in August, then got injured which cancelled a loan move to Feyenoord.
He has only played two under-23 games since returning from fitness and is still developing match sharpness.
He is only 19-years-old, and his message shows they type of mental pressure he is putting himself under to perform in what amounted to an audition under new boss Ralf Rangnick.
As we noted this week, Amad’s chances may have been helped by United’s shift to a 4-2-2-2, and Jesse Lingard really wasted his opportunity to impress.
A loan for Amad may be a foregone conclusion anyway. He needs to play, to get his confidence and sharpness up. His message illustrates his desire to be the best he can be. We will see if he can make up it when he next gets on the pitch for United.
