Altay Bayindir had to remain patient for his chance to star in the Premier League but he failed to take his opportunity.
Ruben Amorim made the bold decision to drop Andre Onana from the squad to face Newcastle United after watching his two mistakes against Lyon in the Europa League.
That opened up a gap for Altay Bayindir to make his Premier League debut at St James’ Park, but United were hammered 4-1 by Newcastle to extend their winless streak to four matches.
United fans were ‘furious’ at Bayindir after he conceded four times on Tyneside, and now Amorim has a big decision to make for the second leg against Lyon on Thursday evening.

Altay Bayindir sends message after Man United vs Newcastle
Onana’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain following his underwhelming performances this season, but Altay Bayindir has not put himself in a strong enough position to capitalise and become the new No.1.
After the full-time whistle at Newcastle, Bayindir took to social media to send a message to United fans.
“Honored to make my PL debut for this club. Not the result we wanted, but I’ll keep pushing, keep fighting,” Bayindir posted.
“We’ll be back stronger — keep believing.”
Harry Amass also sent a message after he was handed his first Premier League start at St James’ Park.
Altay Bayindir horror show explained through stats
After Onana made two terrible mistakes against Lyon to set up an unnecessarily nervous second leg at Old Trafford, Amorim made the call to leave him out.
However, United now have two goalkeepers low on confidence with Bayindir struggling at St James’ Park.
United tried to pass out from the back against Newcastle but their pressing caused issues all match. Bayindir often looked panicked in possession and his stats prove that he was nowhere near good enough.
| Minutes played | 90 |
| Touches | 68 |
| Saves | 2 |
| Goals prevented | -0.19 |
| Errors leading to goal | 1 |
| Passes completed | 49% (28/57) |
| Long balls completed | 27% (10/37) |
It has been reported that Amorim wants new goalkeepers at United, and Bayindir proved exactly why on Sunday.
He completed less than half of his passes, made just two saves and also made one error that led to Newcastle scoring.
