The 41-year-old Manchester United Under-18s head coach was in the Turf Moor dugout for his first match as caretaker manager against Burnley on Wednesday.

Fletcher oversaw United’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Burnley, while the Red Devils search for an interim manager to lead the club for the rest of the season.

Ruben Amorim was axed as United manager on Monday morning and the Red Devils immediately appointed Fletcher as caretaker manager ahead of the Burnley match.

Peter Schmeichel staunchly defends what Darren Fletcher did early into his Man Utd caretaker managerial spell

Manchester United are expected to wait until the end of the 2025-26 Premier League season to appoint Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s reign as United head coach lasted only 14 months, following on from his appointment as Erik ten Hag’s successor during the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Peter Schmeichel has now defended Darren Fletcher after the United caretaker manager admitted that he had reached out to Red Devils legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I know Darren, myself, we’re not the only ones,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily.

“We are a long list of players who speak to him like he is our second dad. And if I was [sic] Darren, I would phone him up as well.

“So, he uses the word comfort there, just to give him comfort and confidence to go into this period, even though it’s just two games to begin with.

“So, I would have done the same thing. I am absolutely convinced that Alex carries no influence in the running of the club at the moment.

“I don’t think he wants to have any influence either.”

What exactly did Darren Fletcher say about Sir Alex Ferguson after his Man Utd caretaker managerial appointment?

Fletcher talked up his relationship with iconic former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and why he spoke to him first before taking up the caretaker role.

“I don’t like to make any major decisions or things without speaking to Sir Alex,” he said, as per ESPN.

“I’ve got a really good relationship with Sir Alex, so he’s probably the first person on the phone, actually, so I wanted to speak to him first.

“And ultimately to get his blessing, to be perfectly honest with you.

“I think he deserves that respect. I wanted to run it by him and see what he thought and he was supportive of it.”

Fletcher will remain in charge of United for the start of the Premier League club’s FA Cup campaign, with the Red Devils hosting Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
