‘A winner’: Ex-Dutch international duo hail Wout Weghorst’s Manchester United move

Manchester United’s move to sign Wout Weghorst on loan has been a big talking point in his homeland of the Netherlands.

Wesley Sneijder was one who criticised the move, with Marco van Basten also expressing his reservations over a move.

This can only give Weghorst more motivation to succeed at Old Trafford, with the support of the Dutchman who matters, his new manager Erik ten Hag.

Now, two former Dutch internationals have come out and backed the move, expressing their admiration for the former Wolfsburg striker.

Weghorst to United backed

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld told Voetbal Primeur that Wout Weghorst’s career so far has amazed him, believing he has surpassed the level he expected.

Westerveld said: “I know Weghorst from Heracles. I thought that was a good club for him. At AZ I thought: this is great, but this is it. He continues to develop, mainly because of his mentality.

“Germany was a nice step, also physically, but he adapted again. He was successful everywhere. This is a kind of childhood dream.”

Fellow former Dutch international Aron Winter, who played at the 1994 World Cup, said he believes Weghorst will succeed at Manchester United, and that he will leave opponents exhausted.

Winter said: “That boy is so driven, really a winner who does everything to win the match. A player like that suits Manchester United very well.

“The Manchester United strikers are skilled, but Weghorst is a target man who can give one or two defenders binds. He is smart and very strong in the air.

“I compare him a bit with Erik Meijer. After ninety minutes he was stretched out on the floor in the dressing room, because they also do a lot of work defensively.”

Erik ten Hag is expected to utilise Weghorst right away, with the striker taking part in his first training session on Sunday.

United have two upcoming away games this week, at Crystal Palace and then at Arsenal, two fixtures the team lost late last season. But this is a very different Red Devils team, and Weghorst can give the side a totally new dimension.
