Marco van Basten warns Ten Hag over making ‘Barcelona mistake’

Dutch legend Marco van Basten has warned Erik ten Hag over signing Wout Weghorst.

Weghorst is reported by The Guardian to be close to sealing a loan move to Manchester United.

But Van Basten follows the same thought process of other Dutch pundits, who have expressed confusion at the move.

Wesley Sneijder this week expressed his reservations over the move, while Pierre van Hooijdonk urged United to move for Luuk de Jong instead.

Van Basten warns Ten Hag

Van Basten has warned Erik ten Hag about signing ‘too many Dutch players’, suggesting he could make an error once made at Barcelona, who previously appointed Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard.

Van Basten told Ziggo Sport, reported by Goal: “The situation can be dangerous if there are too many Dutch and things are not going well.

“I saw this when there were five Dutchmen in Barcelona. Then, this could work against you. Ten Hag should be mindful of that.

“I have my doubts about Weghorst. Take a look at Luuk de Jong. He’s a really good striker that you can play from the air.

“Weghorst isn’t all that good at it, but he’s more of a kid who can do things with enthusiasm and strength…”

Van Basten’s comments are contradictory, urging Ten Hag not to sign too many Dutch players – then offering up Luuk de Jong as an alternative.

Ten Hag has earned the right, surely, for people to start trusting his decisions. He is flying right now, with 20 wins in 27 games for Manchester United.

And as it turns out, he has managed this while signing only one Dutch player, Tyrell Malacia.

While three others have been signed with Eredivisie experience, Christian Eriksen, Antony, and Lisandro Martinez, it hardly equates to justify Van Basten’s critique.

Hopefully Wout Weghorst is listening to all the compatriots’ criticism, who are not showing him faith, even after his two-goal display against Argentina at the World Cup.

It can only provide him, and Erik ten Hag, with extra motivation to make the move work.
