Wout Weghorst isn’t good enough for Manchester United, says Wesley Sneijder

Former Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder has been left bemused by Manchester United’s interest in his fellow countryman Wout Weghorst.

Erik ten Hag‘s Red Devils are in talks with Burnley over signing Weghorst on loan until the end of the season, and the 30-year-old has made it clear he wants to move to Old Trafford.

Weghorst, who scored two goals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is currently in the midst of a season-long loan with Turkish giants Besiktas.

In order for Weghorst to move to the Theatre of Dreams his deal with Besiktas would have to be cancelled first and the Istanbul club would want compensation to cut ties with the towering striker during the January transfer window.

Former Netherlands playmaker Sneijder, who was frequently linked with a move to Manchester United during his illustrious career, doesn’t believe that United’s interest in the former Wolfsburg striker is serious.

Speaking via Netherlands outlet Voetbal Primeur, the former Ajax, Inter Milan and Real Madrid midfielder said: “That won’t be the case. I would find that very strange.

“In terms of striker, is he really someone United are waiting for? I don’t think so.”

Sneijder claimed that there is as many as 300 strikers like Weghorst in the Premier League, and the former Oranje midfield maestro described United’s interest in the 19-time Netherlands international as a “stunt”.

Sneijder added: “They still have 300 of them running in the Premier League. It has to be a stunt. This really can’t be true.”

Weghorst has scored nine goals in 18 games for Besiktas this season and they have an option to buy him for £8.5m in the summer window.

With United having limited funds to spend this month, it looks like Ten Hag has identified Weghorst as the short-term option to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo who mutually agreed to have his contract terminated in November following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
