Nine Man Utd stars who missed out on international call-ups and why

The second international break of the season is now well underway, and Manchester United have some unfortunate absentees from duty.

Manchester United’s struggles this season and the lack of minutes for certain players has meant some deserving call-ups didn’t happen this month.

United still have plenty of internationals, with 14 players called up by their senior national teams.

However, for the others left disappointed, there are a variety of reasons they haven’t got the call.

Here is why each player missed out…

England – Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount

The England squad doesn’t include any United players. However, impressively, Shea Lacey was involved in training under Thomas Tuchel.

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire wasn’t included once again, with Tuchel instead favouring younger options.

Kobbie Mainoo also wasn’t included, likely due to his lack of game time for United.

Luke Shaw has been quietly having a solid season for United, although a return to the England set-up currently looks far away.

Finally, Mason Mount hasn’t been involved by Tuchel, but if he can string a few performances together, he is probably on the cusp of getting a call-up for the first time in years.

Argentina – Lisandro Martinez

When Lisandro Martinez is fit and firing, he is an immediate starter for Argentina.

However, his exclusion from this squad comes as a result of his ongoing comeback from ACL injury.

Martinez is making his way back for United, but he’s not yet ready to play, making it no shock he wasn’t included in the Argentina squad.

Netherlands – Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt

For the Netherlands, neither the impressive Matthijs de Ligt nor Joshua Zirkzee has been called into the squad by Ronald Koeman.

Koeman admitted dropping De Ligt wasn’t an easy choice, stating that the quality of centre-back at his disposal means someone deserving will miss out.

While De Ligt might have thought himself capable of getting a call-up with strong performances for United, Zirkzee won’t be shocked.

Zirkzee has played just 82 minutes this season and will be desperate to get more minutes in a World Cup year.

France – Leny Yoro

Leny Yoro has been called up by France’s U21 side; however, he has missed out once again on the senior team.

Yoro has been immense for United, and he will feel that he is more deserving than some of the names Didier Deschamps preferred.

If Yoro keeps performing like this and United improve, his debut should be just around the corner.

Denmark U21 – Chido Obi

Chido Obi has stepped back into being a full-time U21 striker this season, and as a result, he isn’t getting the same call-ups he was last term.

Denmark’s U21 boss said Obi needed more game time, yet has neglected to bring him on international duty, despite the striker being excellent for his nation in June.

Obi will surely be growing in frustration, but he needs to keep faith and keep working hard, remembering he is only 17 and has plenty of time.
