3 reasons why United should pick Tuanzebe over Lindelof against Arsenal
After two positive cup performances, there is a growing case for Axel Tuanzebe to get more starts for United. Could his next one come on Monday against Arsenal?
Tuanzebe capped off a positive display against Astana, fulfilling a childhood dream by being named United captain, a week later against Rochdale..
He has not put a foot wrong, and with question marks surrounding the form of Victor Lindelöf, he may get a chance sooner or later to partner Harry Maguire in the Premier League.
Here are three reasons why Tuanzebe should start ahead of the Swede against Unai Emery’s side…
Pace to keep up with Aubameyang
Solskjaer’s side will have to keep tabs on Arsenal’s danger man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese international has already scored six Premier League goals this season, building on the joint top 22 goals he managed last season.
Lindelöf is no slouch, but Tuanzebe has the pace and acceleration to stay with Aubameyang, if/when Arsenal opt to play the ball in behind United’s defence.
If United find a way to nullify the threat Arsenal’s speedster brings through Tuanzebe, Solskjaer’s men will have a greater chance of producing a much needed confidence boosting win.
There is no denying that Tuanzebe has all the makings to become a top class centre back and possibly forge a commanding partnership with Harry Maguire, but he needs his break.
Emery’s forward line are great technicians, but they lack a physical presence, which could allow the likes of Maguire and Tuanzebe to bully them and ensure that United are on the front foot from the get go.
Tuanzebe would also give United added aerial presence when they are looking to threaten the Arsenal goal through free kicks and corners.
There has been a regular pattern with United’s set pieces this season, aimlessly chipping the ball into the box aiming for Maguire, it’s becoming too predictable, but having Tuanzebe to deal with too could present problems for the opposition.
Take Lindelöf out of limelight
United’s iceman has had an indifferent start to the season and was recently subject to criticism from his former manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese coach recently claimed that Lindelöf can be bullied by his attackers and is weak aerially, the former Benfica man is struggling for consistency so far this season.
Solskjaer will know better than anyone whether the public criticism has affected the 25-year-old, but a spell out of the team could be the wake up call Lindelöf needs to ensure he improves his concentration levels and physicality.
Unlike last year, if Solskjaer opted to drop Lindelöf he wouldn’t have been able to call upon Tuanzebe. But with the youngster back at United after his impressive loan spell with Aston Villa, Tuanzebe appears ready to seize his chance.
