Two ‘erratic’ Manchester United players have left Paul Scholes really frustrated after Lyon draw, ‘so poor in possession’

Manchester United were seconds away from a huge win against Lyon before an Andre Onana error robbed Ruben Amorim of victory.

Ruben Amorim took his Manchester United side to France on Thursday night for the first leg of the quarter-final clash with Lyon.

Andre Onana talked a big game with Nemanja Matic but was ultimately at fault for both Lyon goals on the night.

Onana misjudged Thiago Almada’s free kick as Lyon took the lead before Leny Yoro brought United level.

Substitute Joshua Zirkzee appeared to have handed United the victory with a fine header, but Onana suffered another moment to forget.

Onana pushed a shot out for playmaker Rayan Cherki to score with seconds to play, allowing Lyon to force a 2-2 draw against United.

Paul Scholes on Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund

Much of the criticism is heading in Onana’s direction right now, but Paul Scholes was left frustrated by two attackers.

Speaking on TNT Sports (10/04, 22:15), Scholes directed his annoyance towards Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

Our United player ratings featured a five out of 10 for Garnacho and four out of 10 for Hojlund.

Hojlund really struggled in United’s attack and suffered yet another testing night in a difficult campaign.

Scholes feels that both Garnacho and Hojlund are just ’so erratic’ when they receive the ball in the final third.

The former United midfielder believes there is a lack of belief and conviction in Garnacho and Hojlund, suggesting that United really need more quality in attacking areas moving forward.

“There were times when the ball went up to Hojlund, into Garnacho… they’re so erratic, so poor in possession that there’s almost no belief in them, there’s no conviction in what they’re trying to do,” said Scholes.

“We all know goals are a big problem for this team and quality is needed all around this team to make it anywhere near a Champions League team,” he added.

United attacking rumours are accelerating amid Garnacho and Hojlund struggles

We know that Garnacho and Hojlund have bags of talent and potential, but United need to see some progress.

Gary Neville has suggested patience over Garnacho, but he isn’t a natural fit as a number 10 in Amori’s 3-4-2-1 approach.

Signing number 10’s will be a top priority for Amorim, and speculation is already mounting.

United are keen on Matheus Cunha, with the Brazilian potentially leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer.

Sporting’s Francisco Trincao is also on United’s radar and could reunite with Amorim after working together at Braga and Sporting.

Reports suggest that Italian clubs now want Hojlund, amid claims in Italy that Napoli are discussing a swap deal involving Victor Osimhen.

Hojlund’s poor season leaves him on thin ice at Old Trafford, and United will continue to be linked with strikers whilst the Dane struggles for goals.
