Manchester United were seconds away from taking a one-goal advantage over Lyon back to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils had come from a goal down to lead in France, with Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee on the scoresheet for Manchester United.
Andre Onana made a terrible mistake in the first half after a week where he had a war of words with former red Nemanja Matic. United’s shot-stopper then spilled the ball into the six-yard box in the final moments which allowed Rayan Cherki to score a last-gasp equaliser.
Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon means there is plenty to play for in the second leg at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim will not be pleased with what he saw from Onana, and there was also an outfield player who let himself down with a poor performance.

Casemiro struggles as Man United draw to Lyon
Casemiro has enjoyed a resurgence at United over the last month or two, with the Brazilian fighting his way back into Amorim’s starting XI.
During the goalless draw with Manchester City, Casemiro broke a tackling record after winning 11 challenges against United’s arch-rivals.
But against Lyon, the 33-year-old had an evening to forget in midfield.
| Minutes played | 90 |
| Touches | 53 |
| Passes completed | 83% (34/41) |
| Dribbles completed | 50% (1/2) |
| Duels won | 13% (1/8) |
| Possessions lost | 9 |
| Tackles | 0 |
| Dribbled past | 6 |
After dominating defensively against City, Casemiro won just one of his eight duels against Lyon and lost possession nine times.
Casemiro was also dribbled past six times by Lyon’s midfield. He offered very little protection for United’s back five who dealt well with the pressure.
Casemiro needs a rest at Man United
At 33 years old, it is clear that Casemiro doesn’t have the legs he used to, and there were clear signs of fatigue against Lyon.
Casemiro is the fourth-slowest player in the Premier League, and he looked like he was wading through mud at times against Lyon.
It was not good enough from the Brazilian, but he has played too much football in recent weeks. He played an hour against Nottingham Forest and has played the full 90 minutes against City and Lyon.

Amorim cannot afford to risk results on Casemiro’s inconsistency, so expect the experienced Brazilian to be given a much-needed rest against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.
