Manchester United showed real signs of improvement on Sunday afternoon, securing a 2-2 draw away at Liverpool.

Few were giving Manchester United a chance at Anfield with Liverpool in great form and chasing the Premier League title.

United had lost 2-0 to Newcastle United last Monday with Ruben Amorim suffering five defeats in the previous six Premier League games.

United stepped up to the occasion though and turned in a performance which impressed the likes of Rio Ferdinand.

Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo were on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw, handing United a well-earned point at Anfield.

Manuel Ugarte was superb, Bruno Fernandes impressed United fans and Amorim can feel pleased with some improvement in a huge game.

Ruben Amorim on Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot

United need to take this performance into the future and make sure this wasn’t just a flash in the pan.

Amorim can be pleased with so many aspects of the performance though, especially how United attacked down the left side.

Trent Alexander-Arnold had one of his worst performances of the season as the Liverpool right back was attacked from the off.

Left wing back Diogo Dalot and attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes linked up well down that side and earned praise from Amorim.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Amorim noted that Dalot is ‘really fast’ and can make a real impact going forward as well as defensively.

Amorim added that Bruno is ‘really smart’, so that Portuguese connection up the left side could become vital moving forward.

“They have the players with qualities and you have to do it how you should do it every game. Dalot is really fast, Bruno is really smart so we can use them,” said Amorim.

Dalot under pressure

Dalot played well against Liverpool and almost had an assist as he crossed for Amad, only for the Ivorian to get his header all wrong.

The 25-year-old has blown hot and cold at left wing back so far and hasn’t entirely looked comfortable there since Amorim’s arrival.

Dalot impressed against Liverpool though and he will be looking to find some form in that position amid recent transfer speculation.

United want Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, viewing him as the ideal addition at left wing back.

Dalot and Mendes are international teammates with Portugal but Mendes worked under Amorim at Sporting and that connection could see him become first choice if a deal can be done.

That may leave Dalot fearing for his place but more performances like Sunday will see him continue to feature regularly under Amorim.
