Manchester United gave a much improved performance as Ruben Amorim grabbed a point away at Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
We would have forgiven any Manchester United fan for feeling a little apprehensive ahead of Sunday’s trip to Anfield.
United lost 2-0 to Newcastle United last Monday and went into 2025 off the back of five defeats in the last six Premier League games.
A trip to face title-chasing Liverpool didn’t look ideal for United but we saw a very spirited performance from Ruben Amorim’s side.
Lisandro Martinez fired United ahead before Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah turned the game on its head.
United didn’t give in though and found a leveller through Amad Diallo, slotting home in front of the jubilant United fans.

Rio Ferdinand on Manchester United display
United may even be a little frustrated to have not won this game having turned in arguably the best performance of the Amorim era.
Liverpool certainly didn’t find it easy against United and Amorim must now build on this performance moving forward.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand certainly appeared to be impressed with Sunday’s performance.
Ferdinand branded United a ‘shambles’ against Nottingham Forest but praised the performance at Anfield.
Taking to social media, Ferdinand admitted that this display is exactly what he wants to see from United moving forward.
Ferdinand noted that the United players on the pitch showed their true selves both on and off the ball, but must now keep that going.
Ferdinand added that United players must ‘govern that changing room’ and hold the standards set against Liverpool in the future.
“That’s what I want to see from Man Utd,” said Ferdinand.
“They have shown what’s in there when they show spirit, desire, effort and some quality in possession. These players have set the standard that needs to been maintained now….the players will feel that performance and know the standard. Now they have to govern that changing room and put demands on each other everyday in training and every match day.
“There will be a satisfied (maybe some feeling could have had more) feeling on that coach home. Remember what it took to create that feeling. Keep building confidence & understanding day by day. Ps Utd better team today,” he added.
What’s next for Manchester United?
Many fans would have been expecting a difficult afternoon at Anfield but United stepped it up to secure a well-earned point.
This can’t be a one-off though and United must take this attitude into upcoming games.
United travel to take on Arsenal in the FA Cup next Sunday with a place in the fourth round up for grabs.
It’s then back to Premier League action as United host Southampton on January 16 before also hosting Brighton and Hove Albion three days later.
United have three home games in seven days as Rangers visit Old Trafford in the Europa League on January 23.
United finish up January on the road, travelling to Fulham in the Premier League and then FCSB in the Europa League on January 30.
Amorim needs more results and performances with his display at Anfield hopefully a sign of what is to come under the Portuguese coach.
