Ruben Amorim got his tactical plan spot on for Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool.

The Red Devils headed to Merseyside on the back of four successive defeats with Ruben Amorim in the worst form of his career as a head coach.

In contrast, Liverpool top the Premier League table and have won their last three. Everything pointed towards a worrying afternoon for United.

However, Amorim was optimistic before the Liverpool clash and he had every right to be. United controlled the match and playing with confidence – something that has been severely lacking in recent weeks.

Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo etched their name onto the scoresheet for United and players left Anfield disappointed they didn’t take all three points with Harry Maguire missing a huge chance in the dying moments.

Manuel Ugarte was exceptional for Man United vs Liverpool

In the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, United’s midfield was torn apart with fans slamming Christian Eriksen and Casemiro.

Amorim made two changes to his midfield against Liverpool with Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte returning to the starting lineup. Both were impressive, the latter was simply exceptional.

United fans raved about Ugarte’s performance, labelling him a “monster” in midfield. A glance at his match stats prove just how much of an impact he had.

Ugarte was reliable in possession and distributed the ball brilliantly to United’s attacking players. He was even better defensively with eight duels won and four tackles completed.

Manuel Ugarte is a big game player for Man United

Arguably Ugarte’s two best performances since his £42m summer move have come against United’s two biggest rivals – Manchester City and Liverpool.

Ugarte was “unstoppable” against City and he stepped up to another gear against Liverpool.

In mid-December, Amorim challenged Ugarte to be consistent and so far United’s head coach will be delighted with the response.

United are in the market for a new central midfielder this month but Ugarte has risen to the very top of Amorim’s pecking order in midfield. He is proving to be completely irreplaceable.
