Rangnick says Leeds equaliser would have been ruled out in Bundesliga

VAR checked a challenge on Bruno Fernandes in the build-up to Raphinha’s equaliser for Leeds against Manchester United today.

United had just conceded a freak goal when Rodrigo’s cross found the back of the net and then they lost the ball again straight from kick off.

Fernandes was guilty of dallying on the ball on a worsening pitch and the decision was made that the goal should stand.

At his post-match press conference, Ralf Rangnick said that the goal would have been disallowed in the Bundesliga and shared what referee Paul Tierney told him about the incident.

“There were quite a few challenges today where in Germany, there would have been no discussion whatsoever,” said Rangnick.

“I spoke to the referee after the game about that tackle on Bruno that led to their equaliser and said in Germany they wouldn’t have even asked the VAR.

“The referee said to me, quite funnily, ‘that is why you had to come to England’! We did well and showed character.

“This was the best reply that the players could give to some articles last week that there was some disruption in the locker room. A game like this, you can only win as a team and this is what was the most important thing for me.”

Perhaps the goal should have been ruled out but United invited the pressure with poor passing and game management after their lead was halved.

It was a throwback of a game on such a wet pitch, with tackles flying in from both sides in front of a raucous home crowd.

But, as Rangnick says, the most important thing is that United recovered because that is something they have not done all that well in recent games.
