Manchester United fell to defeat against Liverpool in the final game of the club’s US tour.

After three games in the US, Manchester United are returning back to base upon the completion of the pre-season tour.

The final game brought a result which no supporter wanted to see, a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool. But the actual performance was not as bad as the scoreline.

Manchester United had 18 shots at goal to Liverpool’s nine, and just lacked the ruthless edge the team needed.

Manchester United fans pick out star performers

On another day Manchester United would have got the reward for the way they dominated large swathes of the game, particularly in the first half.

There are lessons to be learned, and key first team players set to return to the squad when the team link back up at Carrington next week.

Manchester United’s app asked supporters to pick out a star performer from both halves of football.

From the first 45 minutes it was Amad Diallo who picked up the largest percentage of the vote, with 24 per cent.

Amad created three goalscoring chances, more than any player on the pitch, and won seven duels, also more than any other player.

The Ivorian has been the best player across pre-season as a whole, and should be a starter in the Community Shield next week.

Among the 10 outfield substitutes, which ran a separate poll, Scott McTominay earned the biggest percentage of the vote, with 31 per cent.

McTominay came close to scoring, denied from close range late in the second half.

Plenty to work on for Manchester United

Manchester United came away from the game with a few extra injury worries which are being assessed.

United have already lost new signing Leny Yoro to injury for three months and striker Rasmus Hojlund for the first three weeks.

This has increased the need to find alternate solutions in defence and attack, while many fans would like to see some changes in midfield too. The clock is ticking.
