Ruben Amorim put his faith in 17-year-old Chido Obi to lead the line for Manchester United against Fulham.
Rasmus Hojlund was given the nod by Ruben Amorim to start in an injury-struck Manchester United squad that couldn’t even fill the bench on Sunday afternoon.
Hojlund’s struggles continued, with the 22-year-old extending his goal drought to 18 games. He is still yet to score in 2025.
Amorim’s patience with Hojlund lasted until midway through the second half before he was replaced with academy star Chido Obi.
Obi was left out of the FA Youth Cup clash against Arsenal on Friday evening which hinted at his involvement against Fulham. Obi congratulated his Under-18s teammates, but it seems he has now found his spot in the first team.

Chido Obi vs Rasmus Hojlund comparison
With the game level at 1-1, United’s FA Cup clash with Fulham needed extra time and penalties to be decided, which gave Obi some crucial minutes in the first team.
United fans have been impressed by Obi, and the young striker came on and made an impact against Fulham – much more of an impact than Hojlund made in the opening 70 minutes.
Here is a comparison of United’s two young strikers:
| Rasmus Hojlund | Stat | Chido Obi |
| 68 | Minutes played | 52 |
| 9 | Touches | 17 |
| 1 | Shots taken | 3 |
| 50% (2/4) | Passes completed | 80% (4/5) |
| 0% (0/2) | Dribbles completed | 100% (2/2) |
| 20% (1/5) | Duels won | 66% (4/6) |
| 5 | Possessions lost | 6 |
Despite playing fewer minutes, Obi took almost twice as many touches as Hojlund and had two more shots than his fellow striker.
Obi also outperformed Hojlund in terms of passes completed, dribbles completed and duels won.
Chido Obi on track to becoming Man United’s top striker
United’s goal crisis will be worrying Amorim. The Red Devils haven’t scored in open play in the first half for the past 18 games.
Amorim has shown plenty of faith in both Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, yet that faith is yet to be repaid in goals.
The United boss has turned to Obi to try and provide goals, and while he didn’t find the back of the net against Fulham, he certainly showed signs of promise.
Hojlund has to be dropped and Obi should get his chance to lead the line for United from the start.
Up next for United is a Europa League clash against Real Sociedad – United’s last hope of silverware after crashing out of the FA Cup. Obi deserves to start.
