Denmark boss excited by wonderkid as pressure mounts on Rasmus Hojlund, 15 goals scored since joining Man Utd academy

Rasmus Hojlund has endured a difficult second season at Manchester United.

The 22-year-old scored 16 goals in 43 appearances in his debut season for Manchester United after joining from Atalanta in a deal worth £72 million.

Rasmus Hojlund has been unable to build on that in a United side struggling to win football matches. This has inevitably led to criticism from all angles and it doesn’t help that he looks completely shot of confidence.

The Reds are positioned 14th in the Premier League and the only realistic route to qualify for Europe next season is by winning the Europa League or FA Cup.

It is now 17 games since Hojlund last found the back of the net but United fans are still hoping that he can finish the campaign strongly.

It’s also a concern that the Denmark international has scored only two goals in the Premier League this term.

Brian Riemer tracking Manchester United wonderkid Chido Obi

One of the issues facing Amorim and United’s first-team is the lack of goalscorers.

That is why United are being linked with several centre-forwards ahead of the summer transfer window, including Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres.

However, Amorim must work with the squad of players he has until the end of the season.

United have been unable to rely on Joshua Zirkzee for goals and matters were made worse recently when Amad Diallo suffered an injury that could see him miss the rest of the campaign.

Amorim has chosen to dip into the pool of talent in United’s academy by handing Chido Obi his debut against Tottenham before bringing him off the bench again in the 2-2 draw against Everton.

Denmark manager Brian Riemer has revealed that he is keeping a close eye on Chido Obi’s development at United.

The 17-year-old, who is also eligible to play for Nigeria, has represented Denmark’s youth teams but he is yet to earn a senior cap for the national team.

“Can I said by saying that I really think we’re telling a fantastic story here,” Riemer said, as quoted by Tipsbladet.

“Think about how many times we’ve sat with a Danish national team and said: ‘We’re short of players, when will we get some strikers?’ We have so many young players, some of them may be just young enough to break through, but it’s great that we have so many knocking on the door, I think that’s important to say.

“Chido is a player who has played for our U18 national team, so if anything, it’s gone even stronger, so I think you have to say that in order to follow the right business procedures, we have to make sure we do it the right way.”

This should come as a warning to Hojlund who is not only hearing his national manager talk up the chances of a fellow young striker, but that same player is starting to knock on the door in United’s first team.

Chido Obi academy goalscoring record

Although Chido Obi has yet to score his first goal at senior level, the former Arsenal academy star has settled in quickly in his new surroundings by racking up an impressive tally of goals for United’s youth teams.

The young goalscorer missed United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup on Friday night due to his involvement with United’s first-team.

Chido Obi missed out on the opportunity to smash Alejandro Garnacho’s record of 7 goals in the U18s competition, but he will be hoping for more minutes when United take on Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round.

Amorim will be aware of his impressive record for the Academy this season since it undoubtedly contributed to his debut being fast-tracked.

Seven of Chido Obi’s 15 goals have come from three FA Youth Cup appearances.
