Casemiro’s resurgence would not have happened without three Man Utd factors clicking, says Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel thinks Casemiro’s turnaround in form at Old Trafford is inextricably linked with three features at Manchester United after the Nottingham Forest match.

Casemiro played his final home match at Old Trafford as a Manchester United player ahead of the 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder’s exit from the Premier League club.

The former Real Madrid star received a spine-tingling reception from United fans after Michael Carrick took him off and replaced him with Mason Mount.

Casemiro has only one Premier League match left in his Red Devils playing spell before his contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of June.

Peter Schmeichel on the impact of both Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes on Casemiro at Man Utd

Casemiro had been playing deep in the midfield pivot under Ruben Amorim earlier in the Premier League 2025-26 campaign, with Bruno Fernandes playing alongside him.

However, Ruben Amorim’s sacking as Man Utd head coach in January paved the way for Michael Carrick to make his sensational return to the Premier League club.

United legend Carrick moved Bruno Fernandes into the No 10 role as part of his tactical shift, while Casemiro remained in the two-man midfield for the Red Devils.

However, Fernandes has been thriving as a No 10 and Casemiro has superbly linked up with the 31-year-old Man Utd captain since the start of Carrick’s interim reign.

Speaking after Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, Peter Schmeichel said that both Carrick and Fernandes have been important for Casemiro.

“Since Michael Carrick came in, Casemiro has been absolutely fantastic,” he said, as per the Premier League’s official website.

“He’s tracking back, his tackling has been fantastic, and it’s helped him having Bruno Fernandes pushed further forward, because he can pass the ball to him.

“And when he gets the chance, his finishing has been fantastic.”

Peter Schmeichel puts Kobbie Mainoo’s resurgence in the same bracket as Casemiro’s revitalisation at Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes’ movement into an advanced position on the pitch under Michael Carrick has allowed Kobbie Mainoo to return to the starting XI for Man Utd.

Kobbie Mainoo has enjoyed an incredible turnaround in form since Carrick’s arrival at Old Trafford and Schmeichel linked the United midfielder’s importance to Casemiro.

“Having Kobbie Mainoo as his [Casemiro] partner has been great and Carrick has worked wonders for him,” Schmeichel added.

“He’s done really, really well this season.”

Following United’s clash against Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, the Red Devils will head to the Amex to face Premier League side Brighton on 24th May.
