Manchester United have confirmed an extension for striker Odion Ighalo after his previous loan deal expired last night.

The club have announced that Ighalo’s new loan deal will run until the end of January 2021.

Ighalo had earlier dropped a hint he would be staying, by sending a message to fans, wearing a United top.

The Nigerian striker has been training with the first team again this morning as United prepare for the resumption of Premier League football later this month.

Ighalo had scored four goals before the season was halted, and was establishing himself as a valuable alternative for United up front.

He did what he was asked to do

When United signed Ighalo in January, the striker was asked to take the pressure off Anthony Martial and give United a different option.

The competition inspired Martial, who scored four goals in five starts after Ighalo’s arrival.

Ighalo contributed too, scoring four goals himself, and linking up effectively with fellow new boy Bruno Fernandes.

His passion for United shone through, with fans taking to the striker as a boyhood Red Devils fan.

It felt harsh that his dream spell at United had been cut short, and now he has a longer stint at the club than he first imagined, with his loan to take in the first half of next season too.

Now he can finish what he started, and there could be a medal or two in it for him too with the FA Cup and Europa League trophies still up for grabs.
