Ruben Neves is a player Manchester United fans have been crying out for all summer.

ESPN reported in July that United had been in touch with his representatives over a move. It has gone no further, yet.

On Sunday afternoon United got another close up look at Neves against a the side’s Scott McTominay-less midfield.

Neves was very impressive, showing his quality in and out of possession.

He managed 76 touches, more than any Wolves player – although fewer than Paul Pogba (91).

This was not the statistically brilliant performance delivered by Neves against Tottenham a week ago, in which he won six tackles and created five chances.

Against United his numbers dipped, creating one chance and winning one tackle.

He was also unwittingly involved in United’s goal, claiming a foul by Paul Pogba, too late once he saw Mason Greenwood receive the ball in the final third.

Neves and Joao Moutinho competed well against Fred and Paul Pogba in midfield and if not for a brilliant double save from David de Gea and a sliding block from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Wolves would have claimed all three points.

Late to do business

Neves has a knack of being in the right place at the right time and he showed this throughout the game against United.

Whether he can manouvre himself to Old Trafford before the transfer deadline is another matter.

United have signed Neves’ international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, which will take up plenty of the club’s remaining funds.

Another option in midfield is to try and sign Saul Niguez on loan, with The Times reporting he has been offered to United.

United fans impressed

Neves made a positive impression on United fans, moaning about the goal incident aside. Here is a look at how supporters reacted to his performance…
