Cristiano Ronaldo has been honoured at the FIFA The Best Awards in Zurich. An alternative to the Ballon d’Or, the award ceremony has also proved a lot less controversial.
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski deservedly won the award for 2021, for the second year in a row.
Ronaldo was separately honoured with a Special Award as recognition for breaking the international all-time goalscoring record last September. He was also named in the FIFPro World XI.
He flew out to Switzerland for the awards ceremony to collect the prize in person.
The Portuguese forward says he is aiming to to use this as inspiration for the rest of the season with Manchester United.
115 goals and counting
Ronaldo has 115 international goals for Portugal, exceeding Ali Daei’s previous record of 111.
He has now exceeded 800 goals for club and country, an astonishing figure, and he is not done yet.
Ronaldo has broken nearly every individual record there is to set, he is also the Champions League record goalscorer. Now he is more focused on team success for the year ahead.
He is desperate to qualify for the World Cup and get through the play-offs. Let’s face it, the tournament won’t be the same without him.
Ronaldo can help his international cause by getting into good form for Manchester United, where he aims to win a trophy before the end of the season, with the club still in the Champions League and FA Cup.
The superstar gave an interview to Sky Sports last week in which he said he wants his teammates to adjust their mentalities, and push themselves to the limit. He also said he intends to start the improvement with himself. He hopes to be fit to play for United away at Brentford on Wednesday night, after missing the last two matches.
