Manchester United are blessed with young talent and a dominant under-18s team are thrashing teams every week.

If you thought Manchester United’s under-18s beating Leeds by a score of 8-0 was a surprise, then you have not been paying attention.

United are reigning under-18s champions and have a 100 per cent record this season. The team have been racking up the goals and rarely concede.

In eight games played, United have scored 40 goals, and conceded only four. This victory followed an earlier 9-0 win over Blackburn and a 6-0 over Forest. Carrington is becoming the place no opposing team wants to visit.

James Scanlon shines

Manchester United’s 8-0 win over Leeds featured a hat-trick from Amir Ibragimov, plus a goal each from Victor Musa and Bendito Mantato. James Scanlon also helped himself to a hat-trick.

James Scanlon is showing he really is too good for this level. His hat-trick took his tally in all competitions to 10 goals.

Nine of these have come for the under-18s, and he also scored for the under-19s in the UEFA Youth League late in October. Scanlon also has four assists to his name.

Scanlon is United’s highest scoring academy midfielder, just the second player to reach double figures with 10 goals. Striker Gabriele Biancheri has 16.

The teenager’s versatility is one of his strengths, he can play on the wings and in a central attacking role, and he clearly looks too good for under-18s level.

This was a description laid on him by teammate Biancheri, who responded on Instagram to his post, with a message reading ‘too good’.

Gabriele Biancheri has international experience

It is a little surprising Manchester United have not pushed James Scanlon up to play more regularly with the under-21s. That will happen sooner rather than later.

Scanlon has international experience with minnows Gibraltar, already representing them at senior level and scoring.

This big match experience and prolific academy form suggest Scanlon could thrive on loan if given the option in the second half of the season.

There is always the option that Scanlon could even get fast-tracked towards the first team.

New manager Ruben Amorim has a strong record of playing youth, and he will surely take a liking to several of United’s young talents. Scanlon’s numbers this season make him tough to ignore.
