Manchester United youngster James Scanlon is a player in a somewhat rare position – he has made his international debut before his club one.

It’s not totally unheard of. Zidane Iqbal made his Iraq debut before ever making a Manchester United appearance.

Facundo Pellistri also made his Uruguay debut before being selected for Manchester United.

Both players left the club without establishing themselves as regulars. James Scanlon is hoping for better luck, already a Gibraltar international.

James Scanlon helps Gibraltar to rare win

James Scanlon is already now a Gibraltar international regular. He made his debut earlier in 2024, a first start back in June.

Now he can say he has experienced his first ever international win, with Gibraltar notching a 1-0 victory over fellow minnows Andorra in the UEFA Nations League.

Scanlon started and played almost 70 minutes in their win, snapping a streak of 14 matches without one.

Gibraltar’s last win came in 2022, against the same opponents, also defeating Andorra 1-0.

James Scanlon’s season so far

James Scanlon was one of the Manchester United youngster on the USA tour, but he didn’t get a fair shake.

Scanlon was slotted in at right-back amid a lack of alternatives, with Erik ten Hag apologising for putting him in a tough spot.

It was still valuable experience of course, and for now, Scanlon has returned to playing academy football.

Scanlon has been back with the under-18s, starting both games, and providing an assist in the 2-0 win over Liverpool.

His international experience will continue to serve him well for if any bigger opportunities come his way at club level.

Next up is another Nations League match against Liechtenstein, where he will be looking to enjoy another win.
