Manchester United’s U16 side are in Northern Ireland this week for the fabled Super Cup which is among the most historic youth tournaments in the world.

Formerly known as the ‘Milk Cup’, it is a yearly tradition for Manchester United to send youth teams to Northern Ireland in the summer to compete against clubs from across the globe.

It is a huge platform for U16 players, with Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Marcus Rashford some former participants for the club.

The Super Cup saw Bendito Mantato shine in 2024 as one of the players of the tournament. 12 months on from this, Mantato is on the US tour with the first team, showcasing how vital a big performance here can be.

United have taken a strong squad to the Super Cup, which includes several notable names at an academy level, including Amir Ibragimov’s younger brother, Gazimagamed Ibragimov.

Also involved are the Nkoto twins who starred in the 2024 tournament, with Bassirou and Douka both emerging as elite talents.

Michael Carrick’s son Jacey is in the squad, and so is the son of United’s record goalscorer, Wayne Rooney, and he was the deciding contributor for the U16s on Monday night.

Kai Rooney scores and assists for Manchester United

Within the United academy, Kai Rooney has been an emerging talent over the past couple of years, scoring plenty of goals for the U15s and below.

Wayne Rooney has praised Kai’s potential for United and this coming season will be the first he shows it at higher age groups with an U18 debut possible if he works hard enough.

Well, on Monday the Super Cup NI kicked off and the star of the show was Rooney.

In a 3-0 win over a West Cork XI, Rooney scored the second goal, a penalty, which he then celebrated by using Viktor Gyokeres’ ‘bane’ celebration.

Rooney also provided the assist for the first goal, dribbling down the right side before pulling a cross into the box for left back Sam O’Brien to hammer home on the bounce.

The number nine was the star of the show, consistently looking like a massive threat when he got the ball, impressive when considering he is only 15.

While Rooney starred, Bassirou Nkoto scored the goal of the match, picking up the ball in the box, the 14-year-old sat down both a defender and the goalkeeper before finishing into an empty goal with great composure.

Next up for United will be facing Rangers on Tuesday night, while is a game that sees 1st face 2nd in Group C, giving a real immediate verdict on who will progress into the higher quality final stages.

Kai Rooney looks like a first team potential prospect

Being the son of a legend, fans are always going to be excited to see what Kai Rooney is all about, and the Super Cup is the first chance many will have to see the teenager in action.

While far from the finished product, Rooney has the raw qualities which are needed to be considered an elite prospect among his peers.

He often looks the best player on the pitch and gave off a confident and composed attitude which Wayne would have been known for.

Despite being so young, Rooney also seems to have a physical edge on his competition, being almost a grown man in his strength and power, similar to Wayne, which is often the need for a young player to break through.

It isn’t imminent, however if he can perform like this all tournament, his debut for the U18s should be on the cards this coming season.
