Manchester United’s under-21 side were bolstered by a surprise return for young midfielder Dan Gore.
Dan Gore’s return to fitness has been kept under wraps at United. While individual training clips emerged of him last week on social media, it was a surprise to see him start in the EFL Trophy clash this week.
Gore has been out with an injury suffered on his loan debut for Port Vale back in January. It has been eight months since he played a game of football.
Travis Binnion named Gore as a starter against Doncaster. It was a real test, rather than easing him back into an academy game as a substitute, the youngster was named captain against a League One opponent.

Dan Gore vs Doncaster
Dan Gore played 62 minutes for Manchester United’s under-21 side, in a dramatic 3-3 draw which the Red Devils won on penalties.
It was a full-on return, with Gore on the receiving end of rough tackles twice in the opening 20 minutes.
Gore also appeared to have sustained a knock to the head as he walked off at half-time, but was able to come out fine for the second half.
The midfielder was prepared to mix it with full-on challenges of his own, with one terrific diving tackle single-handedly cutting out a Doncaster attack.
During his 62 minutes on the pitch, here is a look at how Gore’s numbers stacked up…
- 3 Tackles
- 1 Interception
- 7 Duels Won
- 44 Touches
- 29/35 Passes Complete
For a first runout in eight months, this was very good from Gore. He showed a burst in possession, willing to drive the team forward, and was not afraid of getting stuck into the physical side the of game.
United have high hopes for Gore and it was disappointing he had to miss pre-season. Now he is looking to make up for lost time.
One year since Dan Gore debut
It is almost exactly one year since Dan Gore made his Manchester United first team debut on September 27, 2023, against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.
Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence in the first team then knocked Gore down the pecking order and United felt it was sensible to allow him to head out on loan.
There was a lot of interest from clubs, and United chose Port Vale. It could not really have gone worse, with Gore lasting just 54 minutes on his debut before suffering an injury.
Gore has had a long road to recovery, and has seen Mainoo ascend to incredible heights, while United have added young midfielders like Sekou Kone into the mix, and seen others behind him like Toby Collyer kick on.
There is more speculation United could add talented youngster Chris Rigg too, adding to the competition.
The challenge for Gore will have been a mental one as well as a physical battle, and the toughest part is over now.
Despite the competition for places, United do need strengthening in midfield, and Gore does have a chance to break through as an understudy for Manuel Ugarte.
If anyone can vouch for him, its his former FA Youth Cup winning teammate Mainoo, and the pair could yet renew their partnership.
