World Cup 2026 is on the horizon, and a number of Manchester United players will be involved.
Manchester United’s players will be looking to emulate the success of Lisandro Martinez, who celebrated winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. Raphael Varane was on the losing side for France in the Final.
Martinez became the fifth Manchester United player to win the World Cup, and there will be a number of candidates aiming to become number six.
Ahead of the tournament, we have taken a look at where every single player in the Manchester United squad was playing in November and December 2022, when the World Cup was held in Qatar. First team loanees included.
Senne Lammens
Senne Lammens was a back-up goalkeeper at Club Brugge behind Simon Mignolet. He left to join Royal Antwerp in summer 2023.
Altay Bayindir
Altay Bayindir was playing for Fenerbahce in 2022. He signed for Manchester United in summer 2023.
Tom Heaton
Tom Heaton was in his second season of his second spell at Manchester United, after rejoining the club in 2021.

Andre Onana
Andre Onana played for Cameroon at the 2022 World Cup. He was enjoying his one and only season at Inter Milan after leaving Ajax. He later reached the Champions League Final and joined United in 2023.
Matthijs de Ligt
Matthijs de Ligt had also just signed for Bayern Munich in 2022, after signing in the summer from Juventus.

Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire starred for England at World Cup 2022. He was the Manchester United captain at the time.
Tyrell Malacia
Remember him? Tyrell Malacia was part of the Netherland side at the World Cup. His last game for his country was in June 2023.
Luke Shaw
Luke Shaw is Manchester United’s longest serving player after joining the club in 2014. He featured for England at the World Cup 2022.

Lisandro Martinez
After signing for Manchester United in summer 2022, Lisandro Martinez played five games for Argentina to help them win the World Cup.
Patrick Dorgu
Patrick Dorgu had not made his professional debut when World Cup 2022 took place. He joined Lecce from Nordsjaelland the preceding summer, and only joined their senior squad for the 2023/24 season.
Leny Yoro
Another quick riser, Leny Yoro had made his senior debut before the last World Cup. He made his Ligue 1 debut for Lille at just 16 in May 2022.

Noussair Mazraoui
Noussair Mazraoui was another Ajax player who quit the club following Erik ten Hag’s exit. He had just signed for Bayern Munich in 2022, and played a key role in helping Morocco reach the World Cup semi-finals.
Diogo Dalot
Diogo Dalot was a regular in Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United squad. He was quickly reunited with Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal in 2022, days after the forward’s Red Devils contract was terminated.
Ayden Heaven
Ayden Heaven was in Arsenal’s academy in 2022, and only signed a scholarship with the Gunners in 2023.
Tyler Fredricson
Tyler Fredricson was part of Manchester United’s FA Youth Cup winning squad in 2022. He actually played under Ten Hag in December 2022 in a mid-season friendly against Cadiz while the World Cup was ongoing
Diego Leon
Diego Leon only made his debut for Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno in 2024. Prior to this he was working his way through their academy.
Harry Amass
Harry Amass was in the Watford academy in 2022. He made their first team bench in January 2023 for a FA Cup fixture, before signing with United in the summer.

Casemiro
Casemiro had just joined Manchester United in summer 2022, leaving Real Madrid. He featured for Brazil in Qatar, reaching the quarter-finals.
Mason Mount
Mason Mount was part of the England squad for the 2022 World Cup and started in the opener. He was playing for Chelsea at the time.
Bruno Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes was already one of Manchester United’s key players in 2022. He helped Portugal reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Manuel Ugarte
Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte was playing under Ruben Amorim at Sporting in 2022. He later signed for PSG in 2023.

Kobbie Mainoo
Kobbie Mainoo had not made a senior appearance for United when Qatar 2022 was played. However, he did score in United’s December friendlies in Spain, and went on to make his Red Devils debut in the Carabao Cup vs Charlton in January 2023.
Toby Collyer
Toby Collyer joined Manchester United’s academy from Brighton and Hove Albion in March 2022.
Dan Gore
Another FA Youth Cup winner alongside Kobbie Mainoo, Dan Gore was playing under-21 football in 2022.

Matheus Cunha
Matheus Cunha was playing for Atletico Madrid in 2022, before signing with Wolves in January 2023. While he played in Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers, he did not make their squad for Qatar.
Bryan Mbeumo
Bryan Mbeumo was playing for Brentford in 2022 in their first season in the Premier League, after helping them win promotion a year earlier. He made his Cameroon debut weeks before the tournament and played all of their group stage games.
Joshua Zirkzee
Joshua Zirkzee quit Bayern Munich in August 2022 to sign with Italian side Bologna. He was not part of the Dutch squad for the tournament, only earning his first call-up in 2024.

Benjamin Sesko
Benjamin Sesko was playing in Austria for Red Bull Salzburg in 2022. He joined RB Leipzig in summer 2023.
Chido Obi
Chido Obi joined Arsenal in summer 2022, leaving Danish club KB. After a prolific spell in the Gunners’ academy, he switched to sign for United in 2024, making his debut in 2025.
Rasmus Hojlund
2022/23 was a whirlwind time for Rasmus Hojlund. He began the season with Austrian club Sturm Graz, before being sold to Atalanta before the deadline. While he made his Denmark debut in September 2022, he was omitted from their World Cup squad for Qatar.
Marcus Rashford
Marcus Rashford was part of the England squad at World Cup 2022, scoring three goals. Controversially he played only five minutes in the quarter-final defeat to France. He went on to enjoy his best ever club season, scoring 30 goals in total in 2022/23.
Jadon Sancho
Jadon Sancho failed to make the England squad for the 2022 World Cup. He did not play in United’s December friendlies, being sent on an individual training camp to the Netherlands by Erik ten Hag to work on his fitness.
