Bruno Fernandes’ World Cup metric with Portugal only reinforces what Ruben Amorim wanted to do with the Manchester United captain at Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder has not reported for pre-season training — at the time of writing — due to his time at the World Cup with Portugal.
Bruno Fernandes was provided with extra time — much like other players — after Portugal reached the knockout rounds before being dumped out of the tournament.
Portugal fell short against Euro 2024 champions Spain in the round of 16 after Fernandes and Co suffered a 1-0 defeat in the World Cup tie in Texas last Monday.

Bruno Fernandes’ defensive pressing stat stands out at the World Cup, despite Portugal’s exit
This summer’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States is heading for the finishing line after Spain punched their ticket to the final on 19th July.
Spain, who defeated France 2-0 in the semi-finals, will now face the winner of England vs Argentina from Wednesday’s clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Despite Portugal’s exit from the last 16 and the subsequent progression of the World Cup, Bruno Fernandes still tops the table in one eye-catching stat this summer.
The Man Utd captain’s workhorse approach has seen him apply 247 defensive pressures, putting him seven ahead of Spain attacking midfielder Dani Olmo.
According to FIFA’s official website, Fernandes has also forced 27 turnovers and directly applied 20 defensive pressures in his five World Cup matches for Portugal.

Bruno Fernandes’ defensive pressing with Portugal is an example of why Ruben Amorim made his position tweak
Fernandes’ final run under Ruben Amorim last season saw a huge change for him after he was shifted from a playmaking role to the midfield double pivot.
Ruben Amorim’s system was polarising at Man Utd, so much so that Fernandes’ influence waned in the final third due to his position in the starting XI.
The 41-year-old former United manager, who was sacked by the Red Devils back in January, might have had a strong case to use Fernandes in the way that he did.
After all, even the Premier League’s official website spotlighted Fernandes’ defensive pressing for Man Utd not long after Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford in 2024.
“This season Fernandes’s 378 total pressures and 26 pressures in the final third leading to a turnover each rank fourth in the Premier League,” Alex Keble wrote during the 2024-25 campaign.
“He also has the second-most possessions won in the final third, with 37, reflecting his hard work from the front.”
Fernandes’ stat at the World Cup is a testament to him outworking so many other players on the pitch, including after Portugal’s exit from the FIFA tournament.
