Last summer Manchester United acted as early as June 1 to complete the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. It was clear that a lot of preparation had taken place mid-season to line up transfer targets.
One player who has emerged as a target already is RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, with the winger’s rapid rise attracting United’s attention.
Diomande has shone for Leipzig with eight goals in 23 games, also impressing at AFCON for Ivory Coast alongside Amad.
The 19-year-old is a top talent who would compete with Patrick Dorgu for United’s left wing spot, although central midfield is the number one priority.

Verdict on Yan Diomande
At the end of January, only two teenagers in Europe’s top leagues had reached double-figures for goals and assists, Lamine Yamal and Yan Diomande.
The teenager only signed for RB Leipzig in 2025 from Spanish side Leganes. He had begun his career at an academy in the US, and also had a trial at Rangers.
Now he is the talk of the Bundesliga, with top clubs circling and high price tags. Sky Sports report United’s interest, with PSG also circling.
Lothar Matthaus told Sky Germany: “Diomande is a fantastic player… He’s a candidate for FC Bayern.”
When he signed for RB Leipzig, Marcel Schafer, Leipzig managing director explained that he was enthused by Diomande’s combination of work rate and natural ability.
“He’s a left winger with outstanding speed, can dribble, is very athletic and can finish. He also never gives up the ball and works for the team.”
Diomande has established himself as a key player for Leipzig, with the winger delivering on everything Schafer promised.
Ole Werner, Leipzig head coach explained: “He often gets past his opponents without any tricks, simply because he’s so dynamic.
“What’s even more important to me is that he works for the team and is very good at counter-pressing. It’s a matter of attitude, and he demonstrates that.”
Analysis from Goal.com reflects on Diomande’s ability and the traits have had seen him make a decisive impact so early in his career.
They describe Diomande as a ‘Blend of eras, combining an old-school desire to go outside his man and get chalk on his boots with the modern obsession of cutting inside to score goals, he is incredibly adept at playing on either flank.’

Yan Diomande’s own comments
Yan Diomande has given several media interviews amid his impressive breakthrough season in Germany.
Speaking to Transfermarkt, Diomande talked about his style and idols, with a couple of high-profile examples.
He explained: “I think Vinicius Junior is the best player in comparison. When it comes to mindset, my role model is Kylian Mbappe. I think you must have a good mentality.”
Speaking to Bundesliga media, Diomande talked about not wanting to lose his flair amid the sometimes robotic demands of modern football.
“I played in the streets. I still play when I go home, sometimes with friends. I like to say: I left the streets, but the streets did not leave me. It is still part of me.
“My style is explosive, fast, and physically strong. Quick, agile, and also a finisher. I know I am not yet a perfect finisher, but I am only 19. With time, it will come – and I will become a killer in front of goal.”
Manchester United may be haunted by the last winger signing from the Bundesliga, Jadon Sancho. There is still only a small sample size of performance with Diomande to go off too.
Ineos’ recent track record of transfer market success should give fans confidence that if they do back a move for Diomande, it could work out. The most recent import from the Bundesliga is Benjamin Sesko, who is finding his feet at United now.
United also have former Leipzig chief Christopher Vivell heading up recruitment, and while he didn’t work with Diomande, this could provide the club with an edge in the transfer race.
