Wout Weghorst to Manchester United: Fabrizio Romano gives update

Fabrizio Romano says Wout Weghorst is determined to clinch a move to Manchester United this month.

United are pursuing the Netherlands international striker, who is currently on loan at Besiktas from Burnley.

This presents a problem, because BBC Sport report Burnley do not have a recall clause in the loan agreement.

Romano says talks are ongoing and Weghorst’s desire to join United could push the deal over the line.

Two deadlines for United

Writing on Twitter, Romano posted: “Manchester United are working to find a solution with Besiktas and Burnley to get Wout Weghorst deal done — both player and club side are confident.

“Talks will continue as player has been very clear: he doesn’t want to miss this big chance, Erik ten Hag wants him.”

There are effectively two deadlines for United to target, the first is whether a deal can be done in time to get Weghorst eligible to play in the Manchester derby this weekend.

For that to happen, this deal needs to move quickly, with Weghorst registered with the Premier League by 12.30pm on Friday.

The second deadline is the real deadline, the closure of the transfer window. There is plenty of time left until it does close, on January 31st at 11pm.

Besiktas could still play hard ball and resist a move, but then they would be left with an unhappy player, who is set to leave at the end of the season anyway.

They would be better off finding an agreement with United and Burnley, and using this time to find a replacement, which could even be their former striker Vincent Aboubakar.
