Fabrizio Romano shares update on whether Man Utd will sign Marcos Alonso

In search of a left-back, Manchester United have now found themselves considering former Chelsea player, Marcos Alonso.

For the decision-makers at Old Trafford, left-back is a problem position which needs solving this summer.

Last season saw Manchester United spend large periods without a recognised left-back option thanks to the season-long injury of Tyrell Malacia and the unreliable Luke Shaw who spent large periods out.

Both are expected to be fit for the 2024/25 season, but for how long will that last? It’s this question which will have Ineos considering options in the market to strengthen this position.

Now, it seems a budget move could be on the cards for United, with Marcos Alonso in mind.

Manchester United now considering Marcos Alonso swoop

While it’s imperative to strengthen this summer, it’s quite clearly less of a priority for Dan Ashworth and co, given the fact if Shaw manages to stay fit, he’ll start every game.

This explains why Alonso has emerged as an option, with Manchester Evening News reporting that the Spaniard former Chelsea defender was an option last summer, and is now being considered again this year too.

United are also interested in Slovakian international David Hancko, and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell. But a move for Alonso could appeal considering he is currently a free agent.

However, for now, the interest is merely from a distance, with Fabrizio Romano denying any move has been made during a live stream late on Wednesday night.

“We had rumours on some players. As of today, Marcos Alonso’s camp has not received any approach from Man United. No negotiations.”

So for now, it seems United won’t be signing Alonso but this could change very quickly depending on what happens with other options.

Why would United want Alonso?

The main reason behind a move for Alonso would be that he’d be free and also fairly cheap while not expecting a guarantee of game time.

This would be of benefit to the likes of Harry Amass who will be looking to push toward the senior squad in the next few years – his performance against Rangers will have shown he’s ready. While his progress may have been hindered by signing a younger left-back.

On the pitch though, United would get what they paid for, with Alonso being slammed at Barcelona with one performance in particular being labelled as ‘horrendous’.

He’s far from good enough, and with just five La Liga appearances last season, it’s not a move we’d be particularly keen to see occur this summer.

He’s long removed from the impressive attacking full-back who shined for Chelsea at times during his six-year stay and United should avoid this at all costs, with a Sergio Reguilon return a far better move.
