Manchester United’s search for a midfielder in 2026 has produced a new target in the shape of Ghanaian star Caleb Yirenkyi.
With Casemiro’s exit confirmed and Manchester United chasing a return to European football in 2026/27, it is no secret that midfield reinforcements will be needed in the summer.
Elliot Anderson is United’s top target, but there is fresh interest in Sandro Tonali which has shaken up the shopping list for the summer.
Who would be your dream Manchester United midfield pairing for 2026/27? ⚽️
Last summer, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba was United’s top target, and Ineos could reignite interest in the next transfer window.
But TeamTalk are reporting that United are showing interest in Caleb Yirenkyi, who is Brighton’s ideal replacement for Baleba. Instead of spending big on Baleba, United could instead make a move for his potential successor.

Everything we know about Caleb Yirenkyi
However, unlike Baleba, Yirenkyi would not be a household name for most United fans. But that doesn’t mean that links to the 20-year-old should not excite supporters.
Yirenkyi is a deep-lying midfielder who plays for Danish club Nordsjaelland. He came up through the Right to Dream Academy which is an academy system within Ghana before moving to Denmark in 2024.
Having impressed on a trial at Nordsjaelland, Yirenkyi found himself in and around the first team within a few months. In the 2025/26 season, he has been a key player, starting in every game he has been available for.
Do you agree with Ineos’ recruitment model of signing wonderkids?
He has scored two goals and provided five assists while playing in a central midfield role and often dropping into a defensive No.6 position.
According to the TeamTalk report, Yirenkyi is often compared to Michael Essien because of his “power, ball‑winning intelligence and progressive passing”.
Jason Wilcox has launched scouting mission for Caleb Yirenkyi
While Ineos have had success shopping from within the Premier League, they have also done well picking up talented youngsters from across Europe, including Senne Lammens in the summer.
Sporting director Jason Wilcox is heavily involved in the recruitment process, and the report claims that he has instructed United scouts to keep a close eye on Yirenkyi’s progress.

It is reported that United have even sent an enquiry about Yirenkyi after watching him in action for Nordsjaelland this month.
Nordsjaelland have already rejected a bid worth around £15 million in January and it is expected that an offer north of £22 million would be required to seal his signature in the summer.
