Bruno Fernandes is not the only player in Europe. So United’s stance is bemusing. Either the club want him, or not. Pay the money, or look elsewhere.
Even in the January market, there are talented players who can be bought.
One is cheaper and arguably even better than Bruno Fernandes. Step forward Dani Olmo.
Olmo on the move
Spanish sensation Dani Olmo was the star of his country’s Euro-21 championship win last summer.
He is a playmaker who can feature centrally or on the wing, and he scores goals. Occasionally spectacular ones too. This season he has netted eight times and provided seven assists.
He led Dinamo Zagreb to the Champions League through the qualifiers this season and shone in the group stages, and now he could be on the move.
AC Milan are heading the transfer chase for him, with Wolves, Leicester and Chelsea both said to be tracking developments, according to Croatian outlet Sportske.
At just 21, he has already been capped for Spain and over the next two years his transfer value could rocket.
His departure from Zagreb is only a matter of time. And if United are not going for Fernandes, they should be pushing for Olmo who is cheaper than the £60 million Sporting are asking for their star man.
Olmo might be a better player too. Or will become one. Few could argue with United choosing him instead, considering he is five years younger than Fernandes and has plenty of time to develop his game further.
The way it is going, United could end up with neither.
The club is seemingly focused on negotiations with Sporting which are now dragging at snail’s pace, while Olmo is being courted by other clubs with United nowhere in sight.
The bad decisions at Old Trafford sometimes veer on the side of negligence.
