Rumours linking Sergey Pinyaev with a move to Premier League giants Manchester United is now becoming a source of comedy in Russia with legendary striker Artem Dzyuba joining in on the joke.
Depending on who you ask, Pinyaev’s switch to Old Trafford is either only a matter of time or a ‘non-starter’.
The teenager spent time on trial at Manchester United a couple of years ago, and the Red Devils were allegedly still keeping tabs on his development as recently as 12 months ago.
After celebrating his 18th birthday in November, Pinyaev recently became the youngest ever goalscorer for the Russian national team, while his dazzling performances at Lokomotiv Moscow have sparked comparisons with arguably his country’s greatest ever attacker; one Andriy Arshavin.
But, despite much discussion over in Russia about Pinyaev’s Old Trafford future – or a lack thereof – there remains a lack of clarity about whether or not Manchester United’s interest is ongoing. Or, indeed, exactly how serious it was in the first place.

Will Manchester United still sign Sergej Pinyaev?
Erik ten Hag has an 18-year-old wing wizard of his own these days too in the shape of Alejandro Garnacho.
Garnacho, after announcing his partner’s pregnancy last week, posted a photo of a Manchester United-themed babygrow outfit on his official Instagram today. One Dzyuba crudely pointed out could fit the 5ft 6ins Pinyaev rather snugly.
“Garnacho announces Pinyaev’s transfer to Manchester United!,” the Russian icon chuckles. “Will there still be a transfer?”
That, for now, is a question without an answer.
One former Old Trafford hero, Andriy Kanchelskis, wonders if the ship has sailed as far as Pinyaev is concerned.
“Pinyaev is, of course, a talent,” Kanchelskis, who won two Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson in the early 1990s, tells RB Sport.
“You can see on the pitch that he thinks a little faster than the rest. I won’t say that this is a definitely a star of his generation. But there are signs that he has a good future.”
“The main thing is not to sit around in the Russian Premier League. He definitely needs to flee to Europe and try his hand there.
“Manchester United interest? I think it’s already in the past. They won’t call from England now, but there are other good leagues.”
