Sir Jim Ratcliffe would risk major Manchester United upset by selling midfielder Ruben Amorim ‘loves’ to Chelsea

There is never a dull day at Manchester United.

As the January transfer window enters its second week, Ruben Amorim would’ve been forgiven for wanting a relatively quiet month — it doesn’t look like the Manchester United manager will get his wish though.

The Red Devils appear on course for a busy month with Marcus Rashford wanted by Borussia Dortmund and Casemiro a transfer target for Al-Nassr.

However, while speculation surrounding Rashford and Casemiro’s Old Trafford futures won’t surprise many, another Manchester United first-team player’s recent links to a Premier League rival will.

Chelsea express interest in Kobbie Mainoo transfer

Chelsea are notoriously big-spenders and, according to the Daily Mail, look determined to continue that trend by emerging as frontrunners to sign midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

The Londoners are always on the lookout for young talent, and, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s Stamford Bridge future uncertain, appear keen to add Mainoo to Enzo Maresca’s options.

Of course for Chelsea, reaching an agreement with Manchester United’s owners will not be easy, especially when, according to Fabrizio Romano, Mainoo is the type of player Ruben Amorim ‘loves’.

A transfer is not completely out of the realm of possibility though — Jadon Sancho’s summer switch proves the two clubs have a working relationship.

Mainoo contract stalemate will worry Manchester United fans

In addition to Sancho’s move, Chelsea have been offered additional hope when it comes to landing Mainoo after the England international’s contract talks with United stalled; forcing a stand-off in negotiations.

Although his current deal doesn’t expire until 2027, the 19-year-old is reluctant to pen new terms amid growing fears of the direction the club is heading in. Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table, United are already huge outsiders to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Even though it is not surprising to hear a player is concerned by the lack of results this season, fans will not want to consider the possibility of one of their brightest young talents jumping ship way before his prime.

Regarded as a top talent and a player Amorim can build around, Mainoo’s impressive United performances will surely be reflected in an improved contract offer sooner rather than later.

Failure to make a breakthrough in talks will see Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos suffer yet another setback in their quest to restore United to their former glories.
