Manchester United made an enquiry to re-sign former FA Youth Cup winner Sam Johnstone, report 90 Min.
Johnstone signed for Crystal Palace in the summer as a free agent after leaving West Bromwich Albion.
United are looking for a new back-up goalkeeper after Newcastle decided to recall Martin Dubravka.
But rather than sign Johnstone, a move for Palace’s Jack Butland is said to be more likely.

Enquiry to sign Sam Johnstone
Johnstone was part of Manchester United’s FA Youth Cup winning side in 2011 along with Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison and Jesse Lingard.
After loans at eight different clubs, Johnstone finally left United in 2018 to sign with West Brom, even earning an England call-up.
United were reported by The Mirror in April to have held an interest in Johnstone, but he ultimately decided to sign with Crystal Palace instead.
Johnstone is second choice behind Spanish goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, with Jack Butland the third choice.
Butland more likely signing
United’s enquiry after Sam Johnstone is said to have been unsuccessful. Palace told the club he is unavailable, which is unsurprising considering he signed only six months ago.
Jack Butland is said to be available for transfer, report 90 Min, and a report from the Daily Telegraph claims talks are ongoing over a loan deal.
United want cover for David de Gea, while a move for goalkeeper Yann Sommer is also an option, report Talksport.
