Manchester United’s perilous financial situation means that sales are going to be vital to allow Ineos to complete the rebuild that they are planning this summer.

Ruben Amorim is 90 minutes away from a Europa League final after Manchester United left San Mames convincing 3-0 winners on Thursday night. This comes despite the domestic struggles, which currently have the Red Devils set for a worst-ever Premier League season.

Regardless of whether United lift the trophy in Bilbao on May 21st or not, the summer window is set to be a busy one with several areas needing to be reinforced with signings.

To fund this, United are looking to axe at least 10 players from the squad with permanent departures, which is not all that drastic when considering the players it might be with four set to leave for free and four on loan right now with a view to leaving this summer on transfer.

United will need all of the financial help possible, and it has even been suggested that Ineos could cash in on academy graduate Alejandro Garnacho for straight profit.

Now, Real Madrid are hoping to do a deal with United, which could raise £21m in funds this summer.

Real Madrid want to use Manchester United as a bridge to sign Alvaro Fernandez

This summer, there are creative ways that United can earn extra funds to spend on the squad, and one involves Benfica and Real Madrid, with Alvaro Fernandez the player at the centre of the triangle.

United sold Fernandez to Benfica for just £5m last summer, but wisely, Ineos inserted a 50 per cent sell-on clause and also a buy-back option worth £16.7m, which many fans have been demanding is triggered.

This is where Real Madrid comes in, according to a report from Spanish outlet AS, Los Blancos are planning a move to sign Fernandez this summer; however, Benfica are demanding a steep £51m.

Such a fee is beyond what Madrid wants to pay and therefore the La Liga giants are looking to United to seek help in signing him for cheaper.

Madrid are planning to use United as a bridge for Fernandez, with Ineos triggering the £16.7m buy-back option they have for the 22-year-old Spanish left-back. Following this, according to the plan, United would then sell Fernandez for significantly less than Benfica would demand.

United are thought to want between £29m and £25m to do the deal with Madrid, which AS describes as a win-win for all parties, apart from Benfica, of course, who may feel hard done by.

It is added that Madrid has been carefully watching Fernandez over the past few years after he quit them in 2020 to join United, and sees him as the ideal fit for the future of the club.

How much profit could Manchester United make from doing Alvaro Fernandez deal with Real Madrid?

This will certainly be an interesting one for Jason Wilcox to consider this summer, but on paper, it seems like an absolute no-brainer.

If United get the top-end £29m fee for Fernandez from Madrid, it would mean a £21m profit for doing practically nothing, money which could be put towards stealing Franco Mastantuono from Los Blancos.

The profit is so large that after paying the buy-back option of £16m, there will also be a 50 per cent sell-on clause for United, which was negotiated into the deal last summer.

So United would be paying £8m for Fernandez and selling him for potentially £29m, which would be a brilliant bit of business by the Red Devils.

Why United should do the deal is that, despite the valuation from Benfica, Fernandez is not worth £51m, so it would be a favour not only to Madrid but also to the player.

If United is looking for finances, this is a smart way to earn some cash.
