Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has picked out the striker he believes would be ideal for the club.

With speculation this week via ESPN linking Serie A strikers Victor Osimhen and Dusan Vlahovic, Scholes has named a different option.

Speaking to BT Sport ahead of last night’s Europa League clash with Real Betis, Scholes says he recommends Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.

Martinez, 25, has starred for Inter since joining the club in 2018, winning the Serie A title alongside Christian Eriksen.

Scholes on Lautaro Martinez

Scholes told BT Sport he believes Lautaro Martinez could work well in Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United system.

He said: “I like Lautaro Martinez. I think he’s Ten Hag’s type of player, [who will] run about, be aggressive, go against people. There’s options out there, let’s bring one in.”

Striker is expected to be United’s number one priority in the summer, regardless of budget.

Cristiano Ronaldo was signed as a short-term option in 2021, and released last November, replaced with loan signing Wout Weghorst.

Martinez has scored 17 goals this season for Inter Milan and is aiming to better his career best of 25 from last season.

Landing him would not be easy, with the Argentine under contract until 2026 after renewing his deal in 2021.

England forward Harry Kane is in the mix, with former Premier League striker Thierry Henry this week saying he believes the Tottenham forward would be United’s best option.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported last October that United are admirers of Martinez. The Mail report his deal at Inter has a release clause of £100 million.
