Manchester United brought in a new centre back and two left wing backs in January but may chase another young defender this summer.

Ineos have favoured signing young players ever since their arrival and that was on show as Manchester United finalised three January deals.

Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu arrived with United viewing them as big talents for the future at left-sided centre back and left wing back respectively.

Diego Leon signed for United from Cerro Porteno but the left back will only arrive at the end of the season.

With an average age of just over 18, United’s three January signings certainly showcase a nod towards the future.

The defensive investment likely hasn’t stopped there though and another youngster is emerging on United’s transfer radar.

Manchester United interested in Feyenoord talent

The Sunday Mirror (16/02, p70) report that United are interested in signing Feyenoord talent Givairo Read.

It’s stated that United have been ‘keeping tabs’ on the progress of Read having broken through at Feyenoord.

There is just one problem here – Read allegedly wants to join United’s bitter rivals Liverpool if he is to move to the Premier League.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot handed Read his first-team debut at Feyenoord last season, bringing him on in a Europa League clash against Roma.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential Liverpool exit this summer means that a new right back may well be wanted at Anfield this summer.

Read could fit the bill but if Liverpool don’t show a firm interest, United may well be ready to pounce and offer him a move to Old Trafford.

Feyenoord’s Antoni Milambo is also on United’s radar, so the Rotterdam club are certainly being watched by United scouts.

Read may well have caught the eye and United could view him as a right wing back option in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

United target Givairo Read profiled

Read hails from Amsterdam but slipped beneath the Ajax radar, instead emerging with AVV Zeeburgia as a kid.

FC Volendam snapped Read up in 2017 and he made his first-team debut for the club in March 2023, aged just 16.

Just months later, Read snubbed a new deal with Volendam in order to join Feyenoord.

Read noted to Voetbal International that former United striker Robin van Persie played a role in his move to Feyenoord, having been impressed with his display against Shaqueel van Persie – Robin’s son.

Read has actually caught the eye against United; he won the Most Valuable Player award at the Mladen Ramljak Memorial Tournament in August 2023, with Feyenoord defeating United in the final.

Now a first-team star for Feyenoord, Read has made 14 Eredivisie appearances this season and even played in the Champions League.

United appear to have been impressed and the teenager could become a key target come the end of the season.
