Man Utd take significant step toward signing ‘very gifted player’, club are ‘reviewing verbal offer’ for possible Marcus Rashford replacement

Manchester United are shaping up to be one of Europe’s busiest clubs between now and the end of the January transfer window.

The Red Devils aren’t known for their mid-season business but this window is different.

After taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, Ruben Amorim has inherited a squad that doesn’t fit his system meaning signings are needed.

A lot of work still needs to be done, including resolving Marcus Rashford’s long-term future, but it seems the club are busy at work with just two full days left in the window.

Man United make Mathys Tel offer

After making just two starts in the Bundesliga this season under Vincent Kompany, Mathys Tel wants to leave Bayern Munich to play a more important role elsewhere.

Speaking recently about the teenager’s proposed exit, Bayern Sporting Director Max Eberl, via BBC Sport, said: “Mathys is a very gifted player, his move to Bayern was very good. Whether it’s a loan or a sale, we’ll see. It needs to be right for all parties.”

The 19-year-old is one of the best prospects available on the market so interest in him comes as little surprise.

As well as Amorim’s Manchester United, the wide-forward is also appreciated by Aston Villa and Spurs. The latter agreed to a £50 million (€60 million) deal with Bayern, but Tel rejected the chance to move to Spurs.

Seeing the Frenchman turn Spurs down has obviously boosted United’s chances, and according to Sky Sports, the Red Devils have made Bayern a ‘verbal offer’ as a result.

Tel-tale sign Marcus Rashford on way out

Although it remains to be seen if United will end up winning the race for Tel, their pursuit does suggest Rashford’s days at Old Trafford are numbered.

Having come through the United academy, the winger has been with the club for 20 years. It feels like a change of scenery is needed now though.

Rashford’s future is unlikely to be resolved until Deadline Day, and Villa, regardless of their interest in Tel, are certain to play a key role in what happens. Unai Emery has recently requested Villa open talks over Rashford so a move to the Midlands could be on for the misfiring 27-year-old.

Should this be how the saga plays out, it could be the perfect solution for all involved. If Tel comes to Old Trafford and their number 10 joins Villa, fans are sure if anyone can get Rashford back to his best, it’s Emery.
