Manchester United could now miss out on a FIFA Club World Cup-starring midfielder who has been linked with both Roma and Nottingham Forest, according to reports.
The Red Devils have been heavily tipped to sign a new midfielder for Ruben Amorim, who already lost Christian Eriksen after the player’s contract expired this summer.
Manchester United are short on midfield options and Ruben Amorim saw both Kobbie Mainoo and Toby Collyer spend time on the sidelines last season.
Casemiro enjoyed a career resurgence under the 40-year-old United manager, but the 33-year-old Brazilian midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his contract.
The former Real Madrid star is not getting any younger either, while Manuel Ugarte was dropped for United’s 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in May.
United have been linked with several midfield options this summer, including Atalanta’s Ederson, Wolves’ Andre and Sporting CP skipper Morten Hjulmand.

Roma take a major step in signing Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios ahead of Man Utd and Nottingham Forest
Richard Rios has been subjected to Manchester United’s interest and the 25-year-old Colombian has emerged on the radar of different European teams this summer.
Premier League side Nottingham Forest and Serie A outfit Roma are also linked with midfielder Richard Rios, who is under contract with Palmeiras until 2028.
Rios impressed at the FIFA Club World Cup with the Brazilian Serie A club and the United-linked player picked up two assists in five matches at the tournament.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma have now strengthened their position to land Club World Cup midfield ace Rios from Palmeiras this summer.
Palmeiras have set a valuation of around £25.9m (€30m) for the Colombia international and Roma have prepared their own offer for the player.
The Italian newspaper reports that Roma are prepared to offer £24.2m (€28m) and include a further £2.5m (€3m) in performance-related add-ons to seal the transfer.
Roma’s current transfer position with Palmeiras over Man Utd and Nottingham Forest-linked midfielder Richard Rios
Corriere dello Sport has claimed that Roma are ‘one step away’ from landing Richard Rios and on Thursday they told Palmeiras they would ‘meet their £25.9m valuation.’
The publication added that Roma have ‘already booked a slot’ at the Campus Biomedico in Rome for a medical for Rios ahead of his move from Palmeiras.
It is believed that the Italian club will aim to complete the United-linked midfielder’s medical ‘before the end of this week’ and his transfer ‘now looks imminent.’
