Man Utd wonderkid will now wear new shirt number for first time in his entire career, one major reason led to change

A promising Manchester United player will now wear a new number for the first time in his playing career after arriving under Ruben Amorim’s reign at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim is preparing ahead for the start of the pre-season tour with Manchester United, which will kick off in Europe with their visit to Sweden.

United will face Premier League side and rivals Leeds United at the Strawberry Arena in Solna and kick-off for the friendly match is slated for 2pm UK time on Saturday.

Amorim has been taking part in his first pre-season training at Old Trafford as United manager after his arrival from Portuguese outfit Sporting CP last November.

United players reported to Carrington for training last week and Amorim has been putting his first-team players and youth academy talent through their paces.

The Red Devils’ pre-season tour will extend to the United States in July and August after the encounter with Leeds United before facing Fiorentina at Old Trafford.

Diego Leon now has his Man Utd number after his transfer from Cerro Porteno and arrival at Old Trafford

Diego Leon agreed to sign for Manchester United back in January when he was only 17 years old and the wonderkid completed his move to Old Trafford this summer.

United announced the signing of Diego Leon from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno earlier this month and the defender has since linked up with his teammates.

Leon, who can play as either a left-back or a left wing-back, has now received his official United shirt number ahead of the pre-season tour and the 2025-26 season.

Manchester United’s official website confirmed that Leon, who turned 18 back in April, will now be wearing the No 30 shirt during his time under Ruben Amorim.

The 18-year-old Paraguayan has represented his native country at youth level and has worn the No 4 shirt during his time with Paraguay Under-20 in his career.

The number 30 shirt has previously been worn by the likes of John O’Shea and Guillermo Varela and has been vacant since Nathan Bishop’s 2023 club exit.

Why did Man Utd summer signing Diego Leon not wear the same shirt number that he wore at Cerro Porteno?

United signing Diego Leon had only worn one previous shirt number in his club playing career before his move to Old Trafford this summer.

The left-back had worn the number 37 shirt during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns with Cerro Porteno after rising through the club’s ranks.

There had been speculation over Leon’s United shirt number and the Paraguayan defender has settled for a fresh start with the No 30 at the Premier League club.

Leon was unable to secure the No 37 shirt at United due to Kobbie Mainoo, who has worn the number since his emergence under Erik ten Hag in the 2023-24 campaign.
