French newspaper L’Equipe now claim that United have contacted the representatives of Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku.
It’s suggested that, while United continue to chase Mbeumo, Nkunku is emerging as another potential signing.
There is no offer on the table just yet, but United have allegedly explored a move for the Frenchman.
Nkunku seems poised to leave Chelsea this summer, having fallen down the pecking order under Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea paid £52million to sign Nkunku from RB Leipzig in 2023, as noted by Sky Sports, but he has failed to live up to the billing.
Nkunku has shown flashes of his quality, but has only managed to score six goals in 38 Premier League appearances for the Blues.
The 27-year-old’s time at Stamford Bridge has been blighted by injuries and he made just nine Premier League starts last season.
United were linked with Nkunku in January, but no deal was done, with the Frenchman staying put at Stamford Bridge.
The summer window will surely see Nkunku move on, especially as Chelsea have snapped up Liam Delap.
Nkunku needs games, but whether he is actually a priority for United remains to be seen.
Nkunku rumours may be a tactic from Manchester United
United appear to have fancied Nkunku earlier this year, but something just isn’t adding up about this latest round of speculation.
Look at the strikers being linked with United; Gyokeres is fast and powerful, while Ekitike is very quick and something of a maverick on the ball.
Nkunku doesn’t really fit the mould of leading United’s attack as a centre forward, especially as his pressing play has dipped since leaving RB Leipzig.
Nkunku could play as a number 10 instead, but that would spark questions about the pursuit of Mbeumo.
Perhaps the talks over Nkunku are being leaked to put pressure on the Bees and finalise a deal quickly.
Nkunku arriving at Old Trafford would be a surprise, but it would make more sense if he is a fallback option should top targets slip through the net.
