Manchester United aren’t far off the asking price to sign Sander Berge this summer, but is he worth the price tag?

This week has seen a new name linked with being Manchester United’s midfield addition this summer and it was a surprising name too.

Sander Berge of Burnley was the name that United are said to be now in contact over signing this summer.

While he seems to be an option, it has also been reported that the Red Devils have some reservations about bringing him in this summer as the midfield reinforcement.

Now, the price United would need to pay for him has been reported and it’s more expensive than Ineos want to pay.

Manchester United told they’ll have to pay £30m for Berge

With interest in Manuel Ugarte being halted due to the unreasonable asking price PSG has placed on him, it would be safe to assume United won’t be targeting other big-money midfielders.

This explains why the club looking for slightly less flashy signings and why Berge has emerged as an option to sign, however, his reported asking price could also leave United dissatisfied.

According to The Sun, Burnley are set to demand as much as £30m in order to part with their ‘complete‘ Norweigan midfielder this summer.

This is £28m more than they’d spent to sign him last summer and after a relegation campaign, his stock has hardly risen which makes this valuation slightly unrealistic.

United view Berge as a player worth closer to £20m, a price which seems reasonable – with the 26-year-old having huge talent that could benefit Erik ten Hag.

Is Berge a good deal for United?

Signing Berge is not a signing many United fans would have been thrilled by had it been pitched in June, but with little value in the market, Berge brings a particular set of skills to the club.

It’s a move we imagine the club’s recruitment staff have advocated for, considering Berge’s qualities actually make him perfect for the way United have been playing football.

The Burnley star excels in long passing, and then also defensively, two areas in which the midfield at Old Trafford has struggled in during recent seasons.

Signing Berge is a move we should have seen coming with Ineos focussing on the players that scouts have identified rather than the name value.

If done for close to £20m, this signing could be one we are lauding Ineos for this time next year.
