Manchester United have made a shocking approach to sign another midfielder this summer after he impressed at Old Trafford.

Midfield remains a priority for Manchester United this summer, with the club thus far unable to strengthen the position.

Countless names have been linked, with Manuel Ugarte the player who looked most likely at one point however the club have now moved away from this deal according to reports.

United has grown weary of PSG’s unrealistic valuation, considering he is effectively transfer-listed.

So, therefore, the Red Devils – along with fans – have been looking into other options and now it has been reported that a surprise approach has been made for a Championship midfielder.

Manchester United make an approach for Sander Berge

So with Ugarte now looking to be off the table, United have made an approach to sign Burnley midfielder Sander Berge.

According to The Athletic, the 26-year-old has emerged as a surprise target for United this summer with Burnley prepared to sell after their relegation to the Championship last season.

United officials are already in contact with his camp ahead of a possible move which would strengthen the depth within Erik ten Hag’s side.

Berge was one of Burnley’s standout performers last season after his £12m move from Sheffield United – all despite the Clarets being relegated.

The Norweigan will have impressed Ineos last season on his visit to Old Trafford, although he was at fault for Antony’s one goal in the Premier League last season.

What could Berge bring to Old Trafford?

In United’s bid to strengthen options alongside Kobbie Mainoo, Berge could be a solid pick if the fee is kept to a minimum.

Berge thrives in the defensive aspects of the game, something which matches perfectly with what United need alongside the star man.

This is according to FBRef which also shows that he is good on the ball – albeit not a volume passer or a player who would dictate play.

He has a pass completion percentage of 88.1%, while also completing 1.92 progressive carries per 90.

Berge is not a luxury signing, nor would it be one fans would be itching to see completed but he’d be a solid addition to the options for Ten Hag.
